| A joist hanger |
When I found this strange fastener in the hardware aisle, I had no idea what this was for.
It is a joist hanger. These are used in the construction of floors in houses, decks, and stairs. The joist hanger is attached to a piece of wood. The end of another piece of wood slides in between the two vertical metal pieces, making a perpendicular joint between the two wood pieces. Nails are then put into the wood, holding it in place. Floors are made up of several joists.
