UHO dou

The double clevis is a fastener that secures a material with a rod and pin. That material, such as wood or metal, is allowed to pivot with little friction. This fastener is used most commonly on farm equipment, towing equipment, boats etc.

Thread Cutting Nut

William Seal
UHO Homework #1

Above is a thread cutting nut. I came across this UHO looking through the “hard-to-find” bin in Lowes Hardware. I asked a gentleman in the store what the purpose of the item was, he explained to me that it is used to cut screw threads into soft metal such as aluminum in order to create custom screws.  It can also be used to clean grunge out of machine screws for smoother threading and a tighter seal.

UHO: Tee nut

I found these in one of the hardware drawers at Lowes. Apparently, they're used to fasten machine-threaded components to wooden parts to keep them from backing out. Some are serrated, some just have points.

Hardware

Inset Concealed Cabinet Furniture Door Hinge Hardware

These pieces of hardware are used to hinge cab nit doors to cabinets. they allow the door to swing out and pull away a bit allowing you to open the door more

UHO: Joint Fastener

I found these things called joint fasteners and they look pretty crazy. They were in one of the speciality screws sections and after doing some research I found out they're for putting together furniture, picture frames, and window frames. I tried to find a video or something of them online to see how they're used because from their shape and everything I don't fully understand how they work. Still pretty cool though.

UHO: Turnbuckle

I'm pretty unfamiliar with most hardware products, and I had no clue what this was when I saw it. This is an eye to eye turnbuckle. Turnbuckles are used to add or release tension on cables. They are typically used for suspension bridges, cables in flight control systems, and rigging and lashing on ships

UHO: Joist Hanger

A joist hanger

When I found this strange fastener in the hardware aisle, I had no idea what this was for.

It is a joist hanger.  These are used in the construction of floors in houses, decks, and stairs.  The joist hanger is attached to a piece of wood.  The end of another piece of wood slides in between the two vertical metal pieces, making a perpendicular joint between the two wood pieces.  Nails are then put into the wood, holding it in place.  Floors are made up of several joists.
