Found Object
When I was riding my bike one day this fall I stopped to rest by this tree. The tree had tons of tiny pine cones on it, they were a little less than an inch in size. I had never seen pine cones so small before, so I picked one off and looked at it more closely. I began to notice how perfect it was. To be so small, it had such intricate details and symmetry. I then thought about all of the things in nature that are naturally perfect (flowers, trees, leaves...etc.) When relating this to my found object project I compared the perfection of nature to the perfection of machine made products. How we have created all of these products that hurt the environment and they are trying to imitate the perfection of nature. So, I used soda cans to try to recreate this perfection of nature. Which brings in human creations that can never be mathematically perfect.

I think more could be done to make your idea more apparent, and I'm curious what your ideas are to develop this further are.
ReplyDeleteI feel that this would communicate more clearly, if you could better choreograph the context (as an installation). For one thing, just one of these looks kind of trinkety / crafty- like, "look what I did with a soda can!" If you could create several / many of these and loaded a single branch down with them, there would be a stronger suggestion of how overwhelming they are- visual weight, excess, etc.
Also I think you are losing impact due to the fact that it is on a big tree outside, amongst a lot of other trees. A better scenario could be to cut/ find a limb to bring into an exhibition space, and then affect only that limb. This would dramatize the impact- using the limb more as a metaphor.
Ahh...I wrote a response to this and then realized I wasn't signed in my blog. I'll try to remember all I said. I definitely would like to develop this further. I am not very pleased with it right now. Originally I was going to weld filler rod to make the contours of the pine cone, more to display the perfection of nature vs. the non perfection of the human hand. However, I got caught up in working on my metal fabrication project that I decided to go with a different material because I wouldn't have had time to weld both. I would like to experiment with welding filler rod on the oxyacetylene at some point though. I agree that creating more of these would lead to a much stronger idea and I also agree that it looks a little crafty. Except I was going to say like an elementary art project. It need something create a larger impact and to get my point across.
